Now in Wilmington, North Carolina, known for jumbo brains, people
were still calling me a Yankee.
I would patiently explain Dodge City, Kansas, where I had been
born, and Colorado Springs, Colorado, where my mom and dad had gotten
a divorce, had been territories in the Civil War, and Houston, Texas,
where I had gone to kindergarten at St. John's Academy, was certainly
in a southern state.
"Yankee!" the kids would scream even more.
