Sufism has to do with preparation .. preparation is everything,
my teacher used to say .. conscious suffering .. you can't
really transform anger, hurt, or sorrow without experiencing it
to some degree .. understanding .. the idea is to understand,
even reexperience, the way you were as a child just before
a crystallized trauma, then to understand what happened to you next,
the way a kind adult would .. a worker hidden in a workshop
spinning a golden cocoon .. something that feels a cross between
an insect and an alien seems to reverse the polarity of neurons
running throughout your body, just a little at a time, essentially
transforming buried trauma into pleasurable sensations .. growth ..
this process, since it does involve transforming just a few neurons
at a time, takes time, anywhere between two years to thirty-one
years, depending .. being in the world .. well, you don't
have to spend time hanging out at a monastery, let me put it that
way .. having a controlled nervous breakdown .. the more
you understand about yourself just before particular traumatic
crystallized events from your own childhood, at various ages, the
better off you are, regardless of Sufism .. and waking up to
a higher state of consciousness .. which as you can imagine,
would have appealed to an intelligent, drug-infested hippie back
in the 1970's.
